The Sterilwave 440 was approved by the French Ministry of Health in 2012 and allows large institutions such as hospitals and waste collection companies to treat up to 800L of biomedical waste per hour (88kg/hr*) in complete safety.

Since 2016 the first Sterilwave 440 machines were installed and commissioned in two large acute NHS Hospitals to required UK/EU compliance standards. Both sites performed well over a combined operational period of 8 years. During that time ‘no NHS clinical waste (EWC180103 and EWC 180104) produced on the 2 sites ever required transfer to other off site facilities for compliant treatment’. The technology performed extremely well throughout, including the Covid Pandemic, where the Bertin technology performed without fault.
Its innovative concept uses a rotating drum vessel and rotating grinder blades to grind down permitted clinical waste catagories. On site clinical waste is sterilised using both dynamic force [heat] within the drum during shredding. Typically this shredding phase alone produces a drum temperature of 80degC; to reach the required sterilisation parameters microwaving is ‘auto introduced’ to ensure compliant residence time and temperatures are achieved. The end product is defined as EWC 191210, a sterile RDF with a CV of approximately 16MJ/KG. Waste volume is reduced by more than 80% and weight by 25% (due to liquid removal during the heating phase). As it uses microwave technology and the vessel is maintained a a very slight negative pressure, Sterilwave technology does not require a separate high pressure steam boiler on site, so there is no risk from excess pressure and no hazardous liquid effluent is produced. Its easy installation requires only 25m² of space per unit for safe treatment of ‘on site’ large quantities of biomedical waste.

Benefits

Full decontamination

Biohazardous waste is sterilised with microwaves (heat it up to 110°C for 20 minutes) and allows microbial inactivation of up to 8log10.

Safe processing

Microwave sterilisation technology does not require pressurisation, and this removes any risk of explosion. Moreover, the microwaves are confined to the inside of the vessel to avoid operator exposure to radiation.

No liquid effluent

The treatment process does not produce any steam or liquid effluent, which means no consumption of water and no need to include an effluent drainage system in its installation.

No segregation

The Sterilwave is suitable for all types of biomedical waste (needles, glass, solids, liquids, etc.)

Easy maintenance

The equipment is built using robust technology. IP connection for diagnostics. Preventive maintenance plan/calendar with alarm.

Reduces weight by 25% and volume by 85%

Biomedical waste is converted to inert waste similar to municipal waste. The dry ground-up waste can also be used as secondary fuel.

Technology

With its automated grinding and microwave sterilisation process contained in a single vessel, the Sterilwave can produce bacterial inactivation (higher than 8log10) of biomedical waste in less than 30 minutes, in complete safety and without intermediate handling. Unlike autoclave technologies, our system does not require the vessel to be pressurised. The Sterilwave converts biomedical waste into dry waste which is inert and completely disinfected, reducing its weight by more than 25% and its volume by 85%. The end product is similar to municipal waste and can then be fed into standard urban waste systems.

Treats clinical waste on producer site. Highly Efficient . Cost Effective . Safe . UK and International Safety Record. Compliant. Reduced CO2 footprint and HGV traffic. Effective.
